A Message from our Fire Chief

The Thessalon Volunteer Fire Department staffs a full volunteer team, including a Fire Chief, Deputy Chief, three Captains, one Fire Protection Officer, two Training Officers, and ten dedicated volunteer fire fighters that proudly protect the community.
Our members are committed to providing a professional service, while ensuring the safety of our residents and those who visit our beautiful town. We volunteer our time to protect life, property, and the environment, from fire and natural or man-made emergencies. While fire response is a primary function, we train and prepare to respond to a wide variety of other emergencies.
Our fire fighters are your neighbours. They are paramedics, cooks, carpenters, labourers, plumbers, electricians, clerks, mechanics, engineers, and business owners. They are committed to protecting our great community. As the Fire Chief, I ask you to also make a commitment to the safety of your family. Make sure you have working smoke alarms on every level of your home, and talk with your family about your escape plan if there is a fire in your home.

2023 Fire Permits

2023 Fire Permits are SUSPENDED during Provincial Fire BAN

Seasonal Fire permits are now available.

Permits are available by the form below or you can fill out a hard copy at the Municipal Office. Permits do not become valid until the seasonal fee of $10.00 has been received.

Payment can be made:

In person at the Municipal Office
Calling the Municipal Office with a credit card
E-transfer to [email protected]; please put in the MEMO of your e-transfer (Last Name – Fire Permit).

Permits are not required for small campfires for cooking or warmth.

Please note the “General Conditions to be Complied with by Permit Holder” on page 2 of the permit; these conditions are to be followed year long.

With the purchase of a 2023 Fire Permit the property owners is hereby authorized to start a fire from two hours before sunset to two hours after sunrise from April 1, 2023 until October 31, 2023. Fire Chief: Scott Lawrence 705-254-8537

GENERAL CONDTIONS TO BE COMPLIED WITH BY PERMITTEE

1. The permittee shall keep the permit at the site of burning operation conducted under this permit and shall show the permit upon request to any person in proper authority.

2. The permittee shall have at the location of the fire sufficient persons and firefighting equipment to control the fires and the permittee assumes full responsibility for determining the sufficiency of persons and equipment.

3. The permittee shall keep the fire a minimum of 4.5 meters from any property line and a minimum of 3 meters from any combustible structure or object.

4. The permittee shall not leave the site of the fire, until the fire has been completely extinguished.

5. The permittee shall be responsible to determine if the restricted fire zone conditions are in effect.

6. No burning with gusty winds or wind speeds greater than 16 km/hr.

7. The permittee assumes full responsibility for all damages of every nature and kind which may arise as a result of the fire set by the permittee and irrevocably agrees to indemnify and save harmless the Town from any claims against the Town of Thessalon in consequence of damages arising from the fire set by the permittee.

8. The Town may cancel or suspend the fire permit that any time and immediately upon receiving notice of such cancellation or suspension the permittee shall extinguish any fire started under the permit.

9. Any costs and expenses incurred by the Town or any Provincial Authority in controlling or extinguishing the fire set by the permittee shall be paid by the permittee.

10. Every person who fails to comply with the terms of this permit is guilty of an offence under the Forest Fire Prevention Act, and/or the Ontario Fire Code and upon conviction is liable to a fine or imprisonment as provided in said legislation.

11. The above property owner is hereby authorized to start a fire from two hours before sunset to two hours after sunrise from April 1st, 2022 until the October 31st, 2022.

12. NO DAYTIME BURNING

13. Burn only a single pile at any one time and ensure the pile is less than to metres in diameter and less than two metres high.
