Official Plan Review

What is an Official Plan?

The Town of Thessalon Official Plan is a strategic planning document that provides a policy framework to guide the municipality's long-term growth, development and land use decisions, and establishes the Town's vision and goals to ensure Thessalon remains a desirable place to live, work and vacation. The Official Plan is a key document for planning and development, and provides policies for managing growth, guiding development and appropriate land uses, economic development and the protection of the environment and cultural heritage.

What is an Official Plan Review?

The Planning Act requires municipalities to review their official plans on an ongoing basis and update it every five years, or ten years after preparing a new official plan, to ensure the plan implements changes to provincial plans and policies and continues to address local priorities and changing community needs.

The Town of Thessalon's current Official Plan was adopted by Council on June 15, 2020, and approved by the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing on November 5, 2020. The Town of Thessalon is proactively undertaking an Official Plan Review to:

  • Update policies for consistency with the new Provincial Planning Statement, 2024
  • Ensure the Official Plan addresses local changes in demographics, housing needs, and economic development
  • Seek community feedback and ensure the Official Plan aligns with the community’s aspirations and values
  • Review and update policies, where necessary, related to matters such as land use, infrastructure, cultural heritage and environmental protection

Why should you participate?

Your participation in the Official Plan Review is essential to shaping the future of the Town of Thessalon.
