Representatives from the Algoma District School Board (ADSB) attended the March 17, 2025, Council meeting to provide an update on the Thessalon Public School Capital Project. The meeting was both informative and productive, further strengthening the partnership between the Municipality of Thessalon and the ADSB.

The Thessalon Public School Capital Project has remained a top priority for ADSB since 2017. Each year, ADSB submits capital project proposals to the Ministry of Education for consideration of funding. However, despite their consistent efforts, the Ministry has not approved their application for funding in any of the past years; and in the most recent Capital Funding announcement, no schools in Northern Ontario were selected for funding.

At the meeting, it was shared that the location for the new school will remain in Thessalon, on the current school property. This ensures that students will not be displaced during construction. While we recognize the historical significance of the Thessalon Public School buildings, the focus must be on the condition and accessibility of the school. Our children deserve a safe, healthy, inclusive, and accessible learning environment that fosters a true sense of community in Thessalon.

The Council of the Town of Thessalon is committed to supporting ADSB in any way possible to advocate for a new school and strengthen the application package. One way we can do this is by encouraging the public to join in this advocacy. We invite residents of Thessalon, Thessalon First Nation, and surrounding communities to write letters urging our Provincial Leaders to prioritize the Thessalon Public School Capital Project.

We have created a Template Letter below, where you can share your testimonials and concerns about the current school conditions. The letter also includes the email and mailing addresses of recipients. If you have difficulty sending your letter please contact the Municipal Office and we would be happy to assist you.

Please note that while the process of securing funding and approvals takes time, rest assured that we are actively working towards this goal!

Working together for our community, our children, our school.
